Riding School: Overview

The Schooling Program at Meadowville Farm is a small organization with 6 ponies and 5 horses. Students of all levels ages 5 and over are welcome.

Kind, gentle, and well trained school horses range from an 11.3 hand lead line Shetland pony to a 16.2 hand retired A rated Warmblood show hunter.

Karen Feeney heads this program. She places a strong emphasis on horsemanship and sportsmanship. Students are taught from the beginning how to groom, tack, and care for the horses and ponies, and are expected to tack and untack before and after each lesson.

“I like to make sure the students have a healthy respect for the horses not only as an animal, but as a partner.” Karen explains “if you simply come out and get on the horse, you may be a rider, but never a true horseman.” Safety is the biggest goal, not only for the riders but for the horses as well.

LEARNING TO RIDE

Our riding school offers both introductory private lessons and group lessons for all ages 5 and over.

An hour long introductory lesson is required of each new student. The goal of the introductory lesson is to make the rider comfortable with horses on the ground. This lesson covers all the ground work expected of the rider before and after future mounted riding lessons. Lasting between 45 to 60 minutes, the rider will learn proper brushing, tacking, and untacking. In addition, 5-10 minutes of riding are included during this time for a quick introduction and assessment of skill level.

* After the intro lesson, hour long group lessons are available. Each group will have no more than five riders in each.

RIDING ATTIRE

Riders are required to wear helmets, long pants and good, sturdy boots with a low heel. Please no sneakers. Meadowville Farm will provide all tack and grooming equipment. Helmets are available to borrow, but there are limited sizes and availability. As lessons continue, we recommend that each rider purchase his/her own helmet.

LESSON SCHEDULE AND OFFERINGS

Lessons are offered during the day, afternoons, and also early evenings Monday through Thursday and on both Saturdays and Sundays during the day only. The times change each season, but we try to be flexible to accommodate most schedules.
